Franz Schubert, known as the King of Lieder, left behind many masterpieces in his short life of 31 years. Symphony No. 5, recorded here, was written at the young age of 19 and is an elegant and fresh masterpiece reminiscent of Mozart. On the other hand, Symphony No. 7 Unfinished is a monument of Romantic music, with its deep melodies emerging from silence that stir the listener's soul.
The performance is by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by the 20th-century master Karl Böhm. Böhm and the Vienna Philharmonic forged a golden partnership over many years. This performance can truly be called the Viennese tradition itself. In Symphony No. 5, the sweet strings and rich woodwinds characteristic of the Vienna Philharmonic perfectly capture Schubert's light melodies. In Unfinished, a live recording from 1977, Böhm's rigorous structural beauty is imbued with the passion of a live performance and the profound spirituality of the Vienna Philharmonic.
