Rare Peruvian Ceremonial Shicra Bag Casca Fiber Handwoven 13"x8.5" Handmade New
Tupicocha
New This exceptional ceremonial Shicra bag was handcrafted in San Andrés de Tupicocha, a small Andean community in the province of Huarochirí, Lima, Peru, where the ancient art of weaving shicras has been preserved for generations. This remarkable weaving tradition was recognized as Peru's National Cultural Heritage for its historical and cultural significance. Unlike ordinary woven bags, this piece is made from casca, the traditional name given by the local artisans to the fine fiber extracted from the maguey (Furcraea andina) plant, a native Andean plant closely related to the agave of Mexico. The leaves are harvested by hand, the fibers are carefully extracted, repeatedly washed, sun-dried, spun, and transformed into thread using ancestral techniques. The brilliant colors are obtained from natural dyes extracted from plants native to the mountains of Lima, creating the vibrant geometric patterns that identify the textile traditions of Tupicocha.
